Persuasive message scrutiny as a function of implicit-explicit discrepancies in racial attitudes

چکیده
• We test a variation of the “Watchdog Hypothesis” based on the idea of implicit ambivalence. • Those low in explicit prejudice and high in implicit prejudice demonstrated enhanced scrutiny of race-relevant messages. • We also test if individuals high in explicit prejudice but low in implicit prejudice will engage in more processing. • As evaluative discrepancies increased, we found enhanced persuasive scrutiny, regardless direction of discrepancy.

Combining Explicit and Implicit Measures to Study the Effects of Persuasive Games
Understanding how games influence players is an integral part of persuasive game design. However, evaluating player attitudes to determine the success of a persuasive game can be difficult, e.g., if games deal with sensitive topics that invite socially desirable answers to explicit measures such as questionnaires. In this paper, we discuss the application of an implicit measure – the Implicit A...

متن کاملAttitudes towards Transracial Adoption: Measures and Correlates
Scholars know little about attitudes toward transracial adoption, how to measure them, or why people hold the attitudes they do. We measure implicit and explicit attitudes towards transracial adoption. Explicit measures generally find support; implicit measures do not. We also look at correlations between transracial adoption attitudes and racial attitudes. These correlations vary for implicit ...
متن کاملMatching Versus Mismatching Attitude Functions: Implications for Scrutiny of Persuasive Messages
Two studies were conducted to examine the hypothesis that matching the content of a persuasive message to the functional basis of people's attitudes enhances message scrutiny. In Study 1, high and low self-monitors were exposed to a message that matched or mismatched the functional basis of their attitudes (i.e., image appeal for high self-monitors and quality appeal for low selfmonitors) and t...

Using data from a national sample, we show that a measure of implicit racial bias -the race IAT -reveals significantly higher levels of anti-black bias than standard survey measures of racial prejudice and that there is only weak correspondence between implicit and explicit measures, thus replicating in this sample previous results from drop-in, web-based samples. In the same sample, we show th...
